There is no longer a short range commercial passenger liner - less than 1500km range aircraft. Medium Range aircraft travel 12'000km, such as the A320 family.
Other oil empires have built strong Airline companies, on the backs of subsidies. All Non-Free Trage, Anti competitive behaviour. Should Iran operate such an airline company, it would command access to China and, I suspect, Ethiopia.
